Food Iterations

Fats

Rationale for choosing these 2 food items
There are 2 types of fats, good fats and bad fats. These foods are of the food fats. This is due to the fact that as human beings need fats to survive. Fats are needed for the development of the brain and to keep us warm. On top of that the 1st level is a beach and when I think of beach it reminds me of sushi that’s why salmon is shown and Toufu is fairly common in Singapore and it would be nice if the people who plays this would recognise that tofu is benficial to their health.
Colour Scheme
For the Tofu having a dark brown head it helps the tofu to stand out in the pale beige sand. As for the salmon it is of the same orangy beige which helps it to stand out due to is reddish tinge over the pale yellowish sand

Fruits and Vegetables

Initially the 2 food items chosen for the level are orange and Carrots. This is mainly due to the fact that they are both orange and orange is a complimentary colour to blue. This would help the player to see the food easier on the blue water background.

Protein and Dairy

Rationale for choosing these 2 food items
The reason why these Ham and cheese were chosen is due to the fact that these 2 items are constantly found together in Sandwiches and on top of that they are also both under the protein and dairy category in the food pyramid thus I decided to put these 2 food items in the game.

Colour Scheme
The colour Sceme of the food items are exactly the same as their real life counterparts. This enables the player to recognise the food items and being of warmer colours it helps the player to notice the food easily over the green background. For example for the cheese it is Orangy yellow (that is the closest to red I can find for a dairy item)  and the ham is  red for the meat area as red is the complimentary colour for green  and thus it makes it slightly easier to see.

Carbohydrates

Rationale for choosing these 2 food items
The reason why these 2 food items were chosen is due to the fact that the food items are very simple and recognisable food items when thinking of carbohydrates.

Colour Scheme

The reason why white and Cyan are used is because they are very contrasting colours as compared to the dark background that is in level 4.

Junk Food

Rationale for using Hotdog for junk food

Hotdog is processed meat. Processed meat has been known for having various additives, preservatives and gone through a long process of processing that it has lost most of its nutrients. On top of that it has sauces which are very high in fats and the bread is usually made out of fine flour which is in a way like pure sugar

Colour Scheme of Hotdog

Uses tones of brown and tried to add on very striking colours such as yellow and reddish brown so  that It can gain the attention of the audience that is going to be playing the game

Iteration1

Iteration2

The art still seemed a little bit weird in the gameplay especially since the player has 4 different sides, it seemed that the characters are moving sideways like a crab thus I had decided to change the food to the side view so that it can actually seem more suitable for the characters and art styles. There was a complaint that the food colours were to warm and needed some cool food items as well to balance out the items for the main menu. Thus the food were then changed to brocolli and Kiwi.

Iteration3

The evil food does not seem aggressive enough therefore I added red eyes and studied a little bit about angry expressions which is shown in below. I also added another junk food, cotton candy.Rationale for adding Cotton CandyCotton candy is a type of candy that melts in your mouth after eating it. A delicious treat that is rather common in Singapore. Usually found in night markets (Pasar Malam) and occasionally sold at bakeries. Cotton candy is usually made out of pure refined sugar with a tinge of artificial flavourings and artificial colourings. With no nutritional value and it can cause tooth decay. Fortunately it is mostly made air and gives the illusion of eating much more than it actually is but eating too much of these is definitely going to  be detrimental to a child’s health thus it had won itself  a spot as a junk food in our list.Colour scheme of Cotton CandyThe colour scheme for cotton candy is tinted pink with shades of pure pink and purple tones. By having such a light colour, it helps to standout against the dark and dull backgrounds of the various levels

Reason to change art style of foodAfter seeking comments about the food art and the initial characters, the art style was still a mismatch and on top of that, there were several comments about how the bubble actually made the food difficult to see and hard to differentiate the food items even after the changes. Thus I had decided to re-start on the food items.

Art Style Changes

Food Characters. The reason why I chose this art style is mainly fulfil the fact that my characters are pixel art and we wanted to remove the bubble completely and add a face to the food. This is to give the food a form of character and to make them cute which seemed to be rather prevalent in today’s mobile gaming culture.

Inspiration

Iteration 1
These food were then re-edited to try to fit the new art style

Orignial

The Food items in the game were to have 2 requirements the size which is 64X64 and they need to fulfil the at l drew these food to that size and also used the clip art inspirations to draw out these images. I had to draw food of different categories of the food pyramid such as the fats whic  is doughnut, Dairy which are milk, protein, chicken, vegetable as brocolli, junk food as french fries and burgers.

Iteration 2
Added bubbles to differentiate between good food and bad food. I Decreased the opacity of the food and added a shine at the side and bottom so that it can it make the sphere look like a bubble

Final Iteration

After sending the game for Quality Assurance, they commented that the food items were hard to see thus I made the bubble lighter and decreased the opacity of the bubbles and increased the opacity of the food so that the food can be seen easier.

Inspiration

The reasoning why I had decided use this art style is due to the fact that they have similar art styles when compared to the characters. What i took away from these clip arts is that they all have a a bold outline and used hard colours to do their shading. They also use very simple shapes to form the food that they drew as well.
